Customer Privacy Is Our Concern

We at The Cheney Companies Financial Group—three commonly-owned companies that are named above—are committed to protecting your privacy and the confidentiality of your personal information. Our collection, use and disclosure of non-public personal information about you is governed by this Privacy Policy and regulated by law.

We maintain physical, electronic and procedural safeguards that comply with state and federal regulations to guard the personal information in our records. We also limit access to personally identifiable information to only those associates that have a business reason for knowing such information. Our associates are required to know and comply with our privacy and confidentiality rules and we take measures to enforce associate privacy responsibilities. We do not disclose any non-public personal information about you, other customers, or former customers to anyone outside our Financial Group except as permitted or required by law.

The Types and Sources of Personal Information We Collect

We obtain most of our personal information directly from you on applications or other forms, by phone, mail, electronic communications, and in personal interviews. Such information includes identifying and biographical information and information about employment status and history, marital status, and residency. We may also use information about you obtained during transactions handled by any of our companies.

We may obtain additional information we need from third parties or public records. We may receive consumer credit information from a consumer-reporting agency. The agency that prepares a consumer report for us may retain that report and disclose it to other persons as permitted by law.

Our Uses of Your Personal Information

We will collect and use personal information about you only in connection with our business relationship with you. This may include evaluating applications, administering various products or services, helping you to buy or sell real estate, coordinating vacation cottage rentals for you, and processing other transactions requested by you.

Disclosure of Personal Information

We may disclose your personal information to others only when it is necessary to conduct our business or is required by law. We may disclose all information we collect, as described above, to the following types of third parties for the following purposes:

  • Certificate holders or policyholders to inform them about the status of an insurance transaction;
  • Lien holders, mortgagees, lessors or other persons shown in our records as having a legal or beneficial interest in an insurance policy belonging to you;
  • Regulatory agencies in connection with the regulation of our business;
  • Law enforcement or other governmental authorities to protect our legal interests or in cases of suspected fraud or illegal activities;
  • Authorized persons as ordered by a subpoena, warrant or other court order or as required by law.

Access To and Correction of Information

You have the right to be informed whether we have certain types of personal information in our files about you, to have reasonable access to it, and to receive a copy of the information. Certain types of information generally collected when evaluating claims or possible lawsuits need not be disclosed.

To exercise this right, you must submit a written request to our Privacy Administrator at the address below. Your inquiry must include your name, address, date of birth, a copy of personal identification such as a driver’s license, as well as a reasonable description of the information which you wish to access.

Within thirty (30) business days of receipt of your request, we will inform you in writing of the nature and substance of retrievable recorded personal information about you in our files. You may review this information in person or receive a copy by mail. We will also identify the person or organization to which we have disclosed this information within the past two (2) years. In addition, you will be given the name and address of any consumer-reporting agency that prepared a report about you so that you can contact them for a copy.

After you have reviewed the personal information about you in our files, you can write to us if you believe it should be corrected, amended or deleted. We will consider your request, and within thirty (30) days either change the information or tell you that we did not and state the reason. If we do not make changes, you will have the right to insert in our file a concise statement containing what you believe to be the correct, relevant or fair information, and explaining which information on file you believe to be improper. We will notify persons designated by you to whom we have previously disclosed the information of the change or your statement. Subsequent disclosures we make also will include your statement.
